Our Rating:

When: September 2009

Our Stay: We stumbled across Abermarlais on our trip through to the west of Wales. We needed to find somewhere to pitch for the night and at first we were unsure about the site’s closeness to the A40 road noise. We chose a pitch at the far top end of the site by the small river and it was actually quite peaceful. As it was the end of the season there weren’t too many other campers and there was plenty of space to spread out.

Feel and atmosphere: The site has a nice simple and slightly retro feel.

Facilities: The facilities block has a wonderful 70’s vibe due to the custard yellow formica doors and separators. They might feel old fashioned but they’re well maintained and clean. Electirc hook-up is available for many of the pitches. There’s a small shop on site that the owner was happy to open for us.

Type of site: Mainly a touring site

Location: Apart from the main road the setting of Abermarlais is pleasant and lush. We took a great walk from the top end of the site and across farm fields to climb a hillside overlooking the valley and all the way across to the Brecon Beacons. The route we walked is marked with a red line on the map above.

Things to do nearby: The site is convenient as an overnight stop-over en route to or from Wales, but it could also be a base for several days walking in the surrounding countryside, including the Brecon Beacons
